  8.      Wisconsin Company Introduces Cloned Bull That Could Lead to
  9. Beefier Steers

  11.      A biotechnology company unveiled a 6-month-old cloned calf
  12.      Thursday, saying its new way of cloning could lead to beefier steer
  13.      and cows that produce more milk.

  15.      ABS Global Inc. said the black bull calf named Gene was the result
  16.      of cloning a stem cell from a 30-day old calf fetus. Stem cells are
  17.      ``blank slate'' cells that haven't yet specialized their function,
  18.      such as a liver or muscle cell, and thus their genes are relatively
  19.      easy to manipulate. But company officials said they had refined the
  20.      process so that any kind of cell could be used.

  22.      ``We can make an unlimited number of cells, freeze them for any
  23.      amount of time, then thaw them and make identical animals
  24.      possessing a desired trait,'' said Michael D. Bishop, vice
  25.      president of research. The company's president and CEO, Marc van't
  26.      Noordende, said it would be several years before the first products
  27.      resulting from the process would be introduced.

  29.      Company officials said adult animal cells were not used to clone
  30.      Gene, which makes him significantly different from Dolly, the sheep
  31. cloned last year by Scottish researchers. Dolly was produced from
  32.      the udder cell of a 6-year-old ewe.
